Five more US States Legalise Marijuana
While many have been glued to the vote-counting in the US election, another win was being celebrated in five American states on 3 November as five American states celebrated the legalisation of recreational marijuana, writes NBC News’ Alicia Victoria Lozano.
Arizona, New Jersey, South Dakota, Montana and Mississippi all approved some use of marijuana while Oregon and Washington DC has legalised the use of psychedelic mushrooms for therapeutic use. This brings to 15, the number of states and territories that have legalized marijuana for recreational use. In addition, 34 states and two territories allow medical marijuana.
The rulings are part of a sea-change on ‘drugs’ as thinking shifts to decriminalise their use and instead introduce measures to moderate and monitor behaviour, supply and sales. The road ahead remains complex as cannabis industries will need to work hard to educate lawmakers and regulators who are operating in new territory, with many still not being convinced of these changes to what has previously been a hard line stance with a prison time price tag.
