Post-partum depression is a silent and sometimes deadly condition that affects many new Mothers throughout the world. The American Pregnancy Association reports that as many as 70-80% of new Moms have some sort of downward mood shift or negative feelings soon after the birth of their child. According to Mayo Clinic, post-partum depression occurs when estrogen and progesterone hormones drop drastically after childbirth. Added to which sleep and a massive lifestyle shift can have a big emotional impact on Moms – and Dads too.
CBD manufacturers worldwide are calling for scientific studies to be conducted on the safety of breastfeeding mothers using CBD to help manage depression. Currently the only studies that exist are around THC, the intoxicating cousin of CBD, which is found to be passed on to breastfeeding babies in small amounts. So while the green light is on for non-breastfeeding mothers with the post-baby blues to take CBD, the jury is still out on breastfeeding and CBD. We hope for more soon as it could be the natural and safe intervention so many Moms need.
