A University of Arkansas study that claimed CBD can lead to liver damage has been widely shared as a cautionary tale for would-be CBD users but Project CBD have formed a rebuttal that pokes some big holes in the methodology of the study. According to the liver damage study, four-and-a-half mice died from ingesting large amounts of CBD, and one-and-half mice survived. Which is an odd number of mice. The dose given ranged from 246 mg/kg up to a mega-dose of 2460 mg/kg CBD.
To put that in perspective, the maximum human dosage recommended for the CBD-isolate medication Epidiolex is 20 mg/kg, which is over 100x less than the amount given to the mice in the study. Government regulation of CBD products is definitely on the conservative side so unless there are complications related to other medications or pre-existing conditions, it’s highly unlikely that users would damage their livers with a daily dose of CBD.
